Food waste is much more of a problem than many people even realize.
The United Nations FAO suggest that around 1/3 of all food produced is thrown away.
Now considering that our population will exceed an estimated 9 billion by 2050 we need to solve the food waste problem now if we are to feed our planet.
Packaging can play a vital role in reducing food waste, by reducing food spoilage in both the supermarket and at your home by keeping fruit fresher for longer.
FP's single servings in plant based packaging works to reduce any waste, as you only buy what you need, and don't throw away any leftovers that have spoiled before having been eaten.
The obsession with oil-based plastic packaging was understandable, it provides:
Freshness
Transparency
Low cost
However the damage that oil-based plastics do to our planet is unacceptable. We in the fruit industry need to find alternatives, and quickly.
This is why FP's™ only use:
Cardboard produced in sustainable forests
Plant based biodegradable punnets
Our cardboard comes from sustainable forests planted in North America. These forests were planted for the purpose of being milled, and are renewed for the next generation.
However for the fruit punnets, cardboard isn't the best option for maintaining fruit freshness, as it sucks moisture away from the fruit into the packaging, spoiling the fruit.
So our punnets are made from cornstarch. These plant based punnets, and are both biodegradable and compostable under the right conditions.
In an industrial compost facility (certified to Australian AS-4736 standards), these punnets will biodegrade in 120 days. At home there are more variables, so the time to biodegrade is completely dependent on your composting conditions. We recommend temperature between 40-60 C, plenty of air (turned daily), as well as maintaining moisture, humidity and a balanced PH.
We believe fruit packaging development is only just getting going, and that there will be better alternatives than cornstarch in the future to keep food fresh, safe and not be harmful to the environment.
As technology develops, we will continue to move towards our goal of zero harm packaging that keeps fruit fresher for longer.
At FP's™ we are committed to making these changes for the good of our planet, and we are determined to be a leader in the fruit industry in making these changes.
Thank you for supporting FP's™ and for protecting our environment, as we are working for global change.
